The Edo Government on Wednesday said it had reached a deal with Sahara Energy to power public utilities in the state with flared gas, The Punch reports.

Governor Godwin Obaseki, who disclosed this after the state executive council meeting, explained that the innovative energy solution included the conversion of flared gas into electricity. The governor said that the initiative would be useful in the provision of electricity in hospitals, schools and street lights.

He also stated that the energy firm, led by its Chairman, Mr. Funso Kupolokun, had indicated interest in partnering the state government in the area of electricity generation, by harnessing the state’s gas assets and other key developmental areas.

The Managing Director of Sahara Energy, Tonye Cole, expressed appreciation to the state government for encouraging investments in the interest of economic development. He said, “The governor has committed to stop gas flaring and to convert it into electricity. This ties 100 per cent to what we stand for,” Cole added.
